"A slurred voice off-camera is ranting about Canadian politics in what sounds like an attempt to goad Ford. "Pierre Trudeau was a faggot!" is the one phrase the lodges in my mind. Ford, pipe in one hand and lighter in the other, is laughing, and mildly protesting at the sacrilege."

This is the best thing I have read all week.

Gawker may not have the journalistic integrity of the New York Times, but I can't think of an instance where they lied.

The entire story here is that John Cook from Gawker saw a video in which Rob Ford smokes crack cocaine and John Cook believes it to be the genuine article.

We'll see what the Star says tomorrow... it's been widely known for a while that the Globe was sitting on a monster Rob Ford story. I think this is that story.

We'll see how it all unfolds. Never a dull moment with this mayor, that's for sure!

Globe ran a story citing the star and gawker, not themselves.

so their "monster story" might not be this

I do feel badly for him because he obviously does have a drinking problem that he's not getting help with. Of course his idiotic, racist, and homophobic comments over the years do make it tough to sympathise.

It's really really hard to sympathise. He's essentially a recluse, you never hear about him doing anything politics related anymore. It's literally just about his substance abuse.

The one part that makes me feel sympathy is that all the negative press he's been getting probably drove him to the substances harder.

But he got that negative press because he has been such a colossal ass to everyone. But was he a colossal ass to everyone because he was always drunk/high? It's tough trying to figure out how much sympathy I want to feel for the guy.

At the very best, if this video is him in it - his supporters will tell everyone to leave him alone and let him go into rehab - and also ask that he step down as mayor. I can't see a supporter somehow making this out as robFord == 'Good Mayor'.

Even the Sun hasn't been siding with Ford for a year now. He basically has no allies left in the media, and less than a handful on council. He couldn't work with anyone, he argues inane points that are completely off topic and he has no idea how a city functions. So now he has basically no power in council, but he's still the face of the city.

Doug Holyday is more likely, being deputy mayor and the one that stepped into the role when Ford was out of office during his appeal. You could argue that would actually be worse than either Ford brother, if you follow Holyday's career.

Assuming the Doug you were talking about was Doug Ford and not Holyday :P

Mammoliti, maybe. I guess. Holyday is more sane than either Ford brother, or Mammo, but he holds equally destructive viewpoints when it comes to running a city. And he might actually be able to implement them because he's not a total buffoon.

Didn't the council just vote with the mayor not to raise transit taxes? Or something like that.

They voted not to do anything in terms of transit funding, because they couldn't agree on any of the proposals. I guess it was agreeing not to agree on anything.

And of course it was Ford that went off on a tangent about SUBWAYS SUBWAYS SUBWAYS again during the council session where the agenda item was finding funding for the already approved and voted on transit plan. But Ford just can't accept that his grand design with no funding couldn't win. So council melted down into chaos because no one has control there to stay on topic.

It's basically how he plans (or planned?) to win the next election. Tout that he wanted subways and was against any new taxes. But of course he couldn't actually find a way to fund the subways because he was against new taxes. It's so idiotic it makes my head hurt, but people will still look past it somehow. Anyone remember when he was sure there was going to be private funding found for the Scarborough subway expansion? Yeah. He couldn't even let up on subways today when talking about the casino. It was going to bring in $100 million per year for transit, according to Ford. Which would build.. around 365 metres of subway per year, if you go by the cost of the Spadina extension.

He's a fucking visionary when it comes to city planning. Sorry for the rant :P
