God of War III intro was pretty impressive. I didn'r even like the game that much, but the intro (as well as Chrono fight) was really jaw-dropping.

Journey is jaw-dropping from the beginning to the end.

The beginning of Far Cry when you emerge from the cave and see the scale and colour of the game. Blew my mind in 2004, and 8 years later still packs a punch.

The Russian levels of the original Call of Duty. Redefined the entire concept of FPS games. Insane levels of cinematic actions.

the scope is simply immense, with seamlessly rendered landscapes with zero loading times and incredible variety. Not many games have all of this

Exiting the vault in Fallout 3 was a pretty good one. It wasn't about what was there, but what wasn't there. Which was any life.

It's one thing when you're walking in a field for an hour, but it's another when they're tied together in realtime battles and cutscenes with tons of action going on. Xenoblade does this without gigantic loadtimes or severe frame stuttering.

There are HD games that would still rather have FMV or higher-res models just for cutscenes, but Xenoblade has the guts to use the 'low-quality' models to tell its story.

Here's something that really blew my mind: whenever Xenoblade has a flashback in the story, it remembers what gear your characters were wearing at those points in the game, even if they're no longer in your inventory.

It may only be an SD game, but Xenoblade keeps up with the best this industry has to offer. The Last Story does as well, but it sacrifes some scope for finer details and often larger parties.

Rockstar's games and Assassin's Creed are other excellent notables.

Ditto. I only used the stagecoach a handful of times through the whole game.

And I was using the taxi to go everywhere in GTA after 10 or so hours.

I'm probably alone in this, but I'm gonna cast my vote for final fantasy 8. It was such a serene yet modern world. When I went to zells hometown, it really felt like a peaceful little village. The scope in gaming has far surpassed it, but I loved that world.

journey.gif is probably my answer as well, but since it's gotten plenty of love already I'll submit Black Velvetopia from Psychonauts. That game was full of stuff I'd never seen before at the time, and even so the scenery for that level still resonates as visually striking and bursting with creativity.

I've seen plenty and I believe I'm well-grounded to say what I did. And it's not just a visual marvel. A previous post of mine:

I've been running around for almost two hours now and I don't believe I've seen all there is to see yet. And I can't count the number of times where I stopped to just gawk at the scenery.

In FFVIII the entire Balamb vs Galbadia sequence blew my mind back in the day, particularly how they fused CG with gameplay.

Watch like 10 seconds of this:

And here is the part where they transition from CG mech armada seamlessly to classroom battle scene!!

I just finished Xenoblade this evening. It is the new definition of the word EPIC!! The story, the voice acting, the art design, and the music are all phenomenal. The breath-taking vistas are not only amazing for the Wii, the are incredibly original and diverse. Seen lots of vast green fields in games, but this is the first one on the thigh of a dead titan, with the corpse of its mortal enemy visable in the distance.

The whole god of war 3 intro. I was too stunned to actually fight Poseidon the first time he's towering over you with the trident because it looked so god damn amazing.

Also an honorable mention is the san fransico part in resistance 2.

And god dammit i've beaten RDR twice and never had that awesome riding into mexico sequence.
