Ooohh yeah...

For director Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was just the beginning of his journey in a galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.

As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.

I think I will enjoy them but I worry they will milk the shit out of the series and there will come a day when I will just be fed up and canít be assed to watch the movies.

Make a tv series of you want to serialise the stories

A new trilogy not related to the OT cast is pretty much what i wanted out of 7-9 to begin with.

It's great they want to create a new trilogy with new everything. I hope they do an Old Republic story where the jedi were at the height of their powers.

I wonder if they're shutting the door on more movies with Rey though. Will they also be making Episodes 10, 11, 12? It'd be a shame if they don't since she's so popular and Daisy is young enough to do more than 3 movies.

Yep, this is where I was too. It's mostly why I liked Rogue One.

The Last Jedi must be fucking awesome for Lucasfilm to hand him a whole trilogy to play with.

All hail Lord Johnson.

Of course. Buying the Star Wars ip wasn't cheap for Disney. I even heard they are going to do a Star Wars TV live action show for their streaming service in 2019.

well they're obviously not dropping ep. X-XII right after the current trilogy. i'm all for something in the interim as long as it's clearly defined as something separate

I can't fathom how anyone would consider this a bad thing? It was time to move on from the Skywalker's.

I doubt they are moving on from the Skywalkers. This sounds like a separate trilogy, but I'm sure episodes 10-12 will be along after.

Absolutely. TFA was massively disappointing to me. It's such an intriguing universe and they decided to rehash the originals. Such a waste.

Lucasfilm/Disney must love the crap out of Last Jedi to do this. Color me cautiously optimistic.

I don't even know where they'll take the story if the current storylines are all wrapped up and they want to distance themselves from the skywalker/empire ecosystem. What other big bads does the star wars universe have beside the empire/new order and the sith?

Hilarious. Disney making sure they get full value out of that purchase.

I feel there's potential in the Rebels assets they have. I could see a trilogy come from that and the masses wouldn't be aware of the animated series.

1-9 was always meant to be the Skywalker saga and GL outlined the story to be 12 movies long (4 Trilogies people, FOUR!) so this doesn't surprise me too much however, a new trilogy in a new part of the galaxy and not connected is effectively a reboot and that does surprise me.

So far Disney's take on star wars has been geared a bit more towards fantasy and spectacle. Not sure how popular it would be but I'd like to see this new trilogy take a smaller subject in the universe and tell the story at a slower more character focused pace. Either way I'm already interested.

Let me guess... There's ANOTHER Death Star and they have to find a way to blow it up for the 4th time.

Personally I prefer the Star Wars universe to the MCU and people don't really complain about those films coming out every 6 months. A Star Wars movie a year is fine by me.

That being said my excitement for this announcement really depends on how good The Last Jedi is. Lucasfilm are obviously pretty confident in its quality if they struck a deal with Johnson for more monies before its release. I'm still taking a wait and see approach after being disappointed by TFA.

I'm in two minds about this, TFA was okay, not good not bad just okay. I'm worried that the last Jedi will just be a copy of Empire (it looks that way from the trailers).

Coupled with Mark Hamill commenting on how he didn't like the direction of Luke in this....I will hold my reservations until after I have seen the new flick.

I'm suffering from some pretty heavy super hero fatigue, I hope it doesn't happen with Star Wars also.
